MUSIC THERAPY

"Music can provide access, even when no medication can, to movement, to speech, to life. For many, music is not a luxury, but a necessity."

What is Music Therapy?
Music therapy is an HPCSA registered health profession that uses music and the creative arts to support physical, emotional, cognitive, and social well-being.
In South Africa, it is facilitated by qualified music therapists who have completed the Master’s programme at the University of Pretoria. Sessions may include listening, creating music, art, movement, and verbal reflection, and are effective for people of all ages, from babies to older adults. Music therapy can take place in settings such as hospitals, schools, rehabilitation centres, and mental health facilities
For those who find verbal expression difficult, for example due to disability, autism, or mental health challenges, music and the creative arts offer alternative ways to communicate and connect, often bypassing speech and cognitive barriers.
No musical experience is needed to benefit from music therapy.
